The Bobcat!!

Hey you guys!! Wow... I haven't posted anything in a VERY long time. Oops... heh...
Anyways! I've decided for today, to do a post on Bobcats, since my mom and sister saw one not too long ago. Plus I mean, have you seen a Bobcat? Then look AWESOME. So! On to the more professional sounding part of this blog post..

So! Like always, I will show you guys a picture of a Bobcat! Here ya goes:
Yeah, they're pretty adorable! And they look pretty much just like big house cats. Except that they have a little knobbed tail, that's usually only about ten inches. Unlike the long tail of a house cat. And, as you can see, they have hair that sticks up on their ears.

All Bobcats are usually this Tan, Brown kind of color. And they have spots and stripes all over their fur. A lot of people mistake a Lynx for a Bobcat. Which actually makes sense since they look a lot alike:

Since you are able to see both of these pictures side by side, you can probably see the obvious differences between a Lynx and a Bobcat. Such as the Lynx's longer legs and bigger paws. Plus the Lynx have more hair underneath their chin that kind of looks like a beard. Whereas the Bobcat does not. But, you can see the similarities as well, the pointed tuft of hair coming out from the ears, and the short tail. Also the fur color is the same, and they both have spots and stripes all over their fur.

Another difference between the Lynx and Bobcat is that they live in pretty different places. The Lynx lives in most of Canada and in most of Russia. It also lives in parts of Asia and Europe. The Bobcat only lives in most of North America, they adapt well to very different places, such forests and swamps, and suburban's, sometimes even deserts.

Bobcats are carnivores, so they eat meat. They can hunt animals larger then themselves, but usually like to go after rabbits, squirrels, and other small mammals. Occasionally they will eat livestock as well, but not the cows and horses, more likely the pigs and sheep. When the bobcat hunts it hunts with stealth. Hiding in bushes and in tall grasses, then using a leaping pounce of up to ten feet to kill the animal it's after.

Most bobcats will start breeding during their second summer, though some start their first year. The females will usually give birth to two or four kits. But sometimes they will have as many as six, or only one. The females usually raise their young alone, with her kits staying with their mother for 9 to 12 months. While they are with their mother, they are learning to hunt, usually being able to hunt alone by their first fall. Once they learn to hunt, they will leave her.

Bobcats will usually live about 10 to 12 years in the wild, but sometimes only six or eight years. The longest they have been know to live is 16 years in the wild, and 32 in captivity.
Sadly, like most animals, Bobcats are sometimes trapped for their soft fur. But still, the North America population of Bobcats is quite large, with as many as one million Bobcats in the United States alone. They are the most abundant cat in the U.S. and they have the greatest range of any wild cat in North America.

I hope you enjoyed this post about Bobcats! I will try to post more, but I cant make any promises!
If you have any suggestions for animals I should write about, feel free to comment!

River Otters

Hey you guys! I think I should just say that im on here when im on here. Because I keep saying I will come on again, then don't go through with it. But, hopefully, since I have started Zoology, I will have some more posts on here!
Today, as you see in the title, is the RIVER OTTER
Not as good as the Sea Otter in my opinion, but still adorable! So, what is a River Otter you may ask? Well, this is what it looks like:
Is it not adorable?!? They are so cute!

Now, onto some info on this cutie! River Otters love to have fun! They Wrestle, play tag, and slide down muddy or snowy riverbanks together. They also express themselves vocally with chirps, whistles, growls, and screams. Their pelts are waterproof, and allows them to regulate their temperatures. They can also hold their breath underwater for about eight minutes by being able to shut their nostrils and ears tightly so that way no water can get in. River Otters usually eat fish, but sometimes they just eat what's easiest to find, like frogs, crustaceans, insects, and such. River Otters live usually where it is wet, obviously, so usually you can find them in streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and along marine coasts. They really just try to live somewhere where they can get to high quality water, with an abundant food supply. Usually in a litter, there is 2-3 pups, which are born blind, but are fully covered with fur. They don't leave the den-which is usually a hollow log or beaver den- until they are 10-12 weeks old, then the mother will start teaching them how to swim, dive, and hunt until they are about 6 months old.
And that is some information on the River Otter! Except one more thing, if you are a mega animal lover you should know, that even though in the past River Otters almost went extinct when there was a bunch of hunters trying to kill them for their fur, River Otters are all better now, and not even endangered! So yay! That's all for today, but I'm thinking sometime soon to do one on a type of fox or wolf... what do you guys think? Hopefully I will remember because I forgot how fun this is.

Hunting animals for sport (Cont.)

Ok, so for school I had to write a persuasive paper, and of course I decided to have it be something about animals. I knew I put some things on this blog, and I found my old post about hunting animals for sport. I decided to have my paper be about that. And so I looked up more detailed info about it. So, I decided to put it on here! I hope you guys enjoy a more detailed description of hunting animals, and about how its bad and such.
Here it is:

When humans first started hunting animals it was to put food on the table and so that they could have warm clothes during the harsh winters in Antartica. But it slowly started to become a pastime and a sport to hunt poor, helpless, animals just for the fun of it.

These days, hunters go out and kill animals not for food or for clothing but just for the fun of killing the animal. Because of this, many animals have gone extinct due to the hunters form of recreation. Examples are the Great Auk and the Tasmanian Tiger.

Many of the animals die slowly and painfully by how the hunters just injure them very badly. Some hunters say that hunting needs to happen because some of the animals are over-populated and need to be smaller. But, the majority of species that are hunted - waterfowl, upland birds, mourning doves, squirrels, rabbits, crows, coyotes, etc.- do not require population control. It's just shooting at living targets for the fun of it and inflicting trauma onto helpless animals.

If hunters didn't kill so many animals, some people think that some animal groups would get too over-populated. However, the way nature and wildlife work, that would not happen because other preditors would eat the animals that are getting killed by hunters which would keep forests and other places balanced.

100 million animals are reported killed by hunters each year and hunting also disrupts migrations and family units. Wolves live in close-knit familys and count on each other and hunters going out and killing even one of them can devistate the entire group. Also, the animals that are being killed, other creatures count on them for food. When those animals get killed off, eventually the other animal that fed off of them won't be able to find its main source of food, and it will eventually die too.

Hunting can hurt other people too. There has been reports of hunting accidents where a hunter has shot a friend he was with. There has been thousands of injurys from hunting reported in the U.S. every year and that only includes accidents that humans caused. Killing an animal just so that you can have a "trophy" to hang on your wall is not a good reason to go out killing healthy animals and disrupting the ecosystem.

If you read all of that, congrats! XD I hope to be writing more on here during the summer, and in the fall since I am able to do zoology for school! So I should have more info about more animals, or I will just share what I learned about! See ya guys soon!

Now, if you think those arnt just a LITTLE scary, then congrats. If you think they look cool, what is wrong with you? Just kidding. The one that freaks me out the most is that first one...
though not all deep sea animals are scary. Most are, but some not really. Like these:

Now the first one actually kind of looks cute to me. XD But today im going to tell you about one of these deep sea creatures.
and the animal for today is.. (drum roll please..)
THE JAPANESE SPIDER CRAB!!!!
Yup, this thing:
The Japanese Spider Crab is the largest known crab species, with a body of 15 inches, the legs can be up to 12 feet, and the whole crab can weigh 41 pounds!  Hence the name, the crab only lives in the water around Japan.
They have eight legs, and two arms for feeding. Each of the arms are 5 feet long. The Japanese Spider Crab is orange in color with white spots on its legs. It is found in depths of about 2,500 feet underwater.
The crab usually only eats the bodies of dead animals, but it can also eat on shellfish. After they molt, they will eat their own shells for special nutrients! They are also very gentle animals. Even though they may look ferocious.
Here is the size of a Japanese spider crab next to a person:
ITS SO HUUUUGE!!!! XD
Well thats it for today! Hopefully I will think of another animal to do soon...
plus, this post was meant to be for yesterday. But oh well! I had to go somewhere and didnt have time to finish this. :P

Hunting animals for sport

Humans used to have to hunt to put food on the table, but now hunting is a pastime,
,and worse,: waterfowl, pheasant, and dove hunting are no more the shooting at living
targets. Some hunting is done only to get trophies or to see who can kill the most.
Weapons such as the bow and arrow are increasingly used. In all cases sport hunting
inflicts cruelty- Pain, trauma, wounding, and death- on creatures.
More then 100 million animals are reported killed by hunters each year.
The majority of species that are hunted - waterfowl, upland birds, mourning doves,
squirrels, rabbits, crows, coyotes, etc.- do not require population control.
Its sad that some people kill animals just for the fun of it, or to get a trophy or something.

Please check out my friend and mine's website! its at oceanlife.webs.com! Thanks!

Im going to put on some funny pics to lighten the mood! :)
